Summary

Maine Republican lawmaker Lucas Lanigan won re-election to the state House by a single vote after a recount, despite facing domestic violence aggravated assault charges.

Lanigan is accused of choking his wife during a confrontation about an alleged affair, though he denies wrongdoing and calls the charges “ridiculous.”

His wife later asked for the charges to be dropped, but prosecutors are proceeding, citing evidence of strangulation.

Democrats have called for his resignation, while Republican leaders emphasized due process.

https://naplesshelter.org/strangulation/

any reported history of strangulation places the person at a higher risk for more serious violence or homicide by the hands of their intimate partner. Data on strangulation reveals a glaring picture of the severity of this type of assault. One in four women will experience intimate partner violence (IPV) in their lifetime, and of those, up to 68 percent will suffer near-fatal strangulation at the hands of their partner.

Of the victims, 97 percent are strangled by hands; 38 percent reported losing consciousness; 35 percent are strangled during sexual assault/abuse; 9 percent are also pregnant, and 70 percent of strangled women believed they were going to die.

This article diffinerates between choking and strangulation; the former being airflow being blocked from applying pressure to your throat and the latter is blocking airflow and/or bloodflow from applying pressure on the side of your neck. I don't think this is common knowledge and I would not trust anyone who put their hands on someone else's neck
