We need a solution to this, because honestly the US just lost its democracy.

It's 1933.

Any ideas on ways out of this?

Organize. Use direct action to sabotage the conservative agenda. General strikes. Protests. Spicy protests.

The solution is to have ranked voting and/or proportional representation.

Not a 2 party system where neither candidate is the peoples choice.

  1. Get organized. Join a Leftist org, find solidarity with fellow comrades, and protect each other. The Dems will not save you, it is up to the Workers to protect themselves. The Party for Socialism and Liberation and Freedom Road Socialist Organization both organize year round, every year, because the battle for progress is a constant struggle, not a single election. See if there is a chapter near you, or start one! Or, see if there's an org you like more near you and join it, the point is that organizing is the best thing any leftist can do.

  2. Read theory. A good primer is Blackshirts and Reds. It will help contextualize what fascism is, what causes it, and how to stop it. I can offer more advanced reading lists regarding Marxism if you'd like, but this is a good starting point.

  3. Aggressively combat white supremacy, misogyny, queerphobia, and other attacks on marginalized communities. Cede no ground.

  4. Be more industrious, and self-sufficient. Take up gardening, home repair, tinkering. It is through practice that you elevate your problem-solving capabilities. Not only will you improve your skill at one subject, but your general problem-solving muscles get strengthened as well. Theory guides practice, which sharpens theory to be reapplied to better practice.

  5. Learn self-defense. Get armed, if practical. Be ready to protect yourself and others. The Democrats will not save us, we must save each other.

  6. Be persistent. If you feel like a single water driplet against a mountain, think of the Grand Canyon. Oh, how our efforts pile up! With consistency, every rock, boulder, even mountain, can be drilled through with nothing but steady and persistent water droplets.

I don't always agree with this user but they're speaking the truth.

I tell people as often as I can, especially my trans and bipoc friends; now is the time. Get a couple guns (a long one and a short one) and learn how to use them. Learn some basic first aid, you really just need to know how to stabilize someone. Start networking with like-minded people in your communities. The police will not protect us, they’ve proven they’ll happily club senior citizens to the ground and shoot any protesters in the face with rubber bullets while escorting a rightwing murderer to safety.

Our current situation really is the culmination of almost 70 years of rightwing efforts.

It’s a long listen but worth checking out How Conservatism Won by Robert Evans. He lays out in a clear concise way “how a consortium of rich failsons got together to fund a network of right wing think tanks and shift American culture in a fun new direction. (note: it was not actually fun at all).” Those think tanks are now pipelines used to funnel ideological purists into powerful positions like our current Supreme Court and undoubtedly the president-elects new cabinet and policy-writers.

I would add guerilla tactics. But, the main issue is that the US Constitution allow it. Freedom has a limit, once you passed the limit, you allow fascism.

[–] BallsandBayonets@lemmings.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

Last time it took a World War to stop the fascism. On the plus side, with the wars that are already going on it'll be easier to spark it into a global war!

Can you elaborate on how the US has lost its democracy? The democracy voted him in, in 4 years it will vote someone else in. Unless you genuinely believe that Trump has any power to change that.

[–] weeeeum@lemmy.world 13 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Do you know Germany was democratic until they voted for Hitler?

[–] Riversedgeknight1@lemmy.world -2 points 2 weeks ago

That's an insult to democracies everywhere. You can't seriously draw a comparison between the US today and pre-hitler Germany. Not all democracies are equal, as modern-day Russia proves.

[–] laverabe@lemmy.world 10 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

He has stated he will be a dictator. The Senate flipped Republican and there is a good chance the house will too.

With total control of the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of government, all they have to do is repeal the filibuster (very easy), and they have complete unchecked control.

They will obviously start with things that are not as bad, but they're not going to want to give up their power, and in 2 years there is a zero percent chance elections will be held democratically. They might appear democratic, but they'll resemble "elections" in Russia.

[–] Riversedgeknight1@lemmy.world -2 points 2 weeks ago

So removing the filibuster 1. Can't happen while the filibuster is in place (because the left could just filibuster) and 2. Was a major pushing point for the left not more than 2 years ago. You either have no real knowledge of how the government works or think every American other than you has literal brain damage if you think that our system allows for such a radical change in 2 years. This "democracy is over" rhetoric has been said almost every 4 years like clockwork. If you think that the country is in a worse place now than it was in the Great Depression and WW2 you are delusional. I dislike Trump and voted for Kamala, because I can't stand stupid. Trump isn't Hitler. He's his own type of shit, but nowhere near as bad. It is fair to say that you think the country will be worse off with Trump as lead. But you have exaggerated it so much you look like a bigger clown than he is.

[–] irreticent@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I honestly believe that he will manufacture an event (civil war, massive civil unrest, etc.) in order to declare martial law and suspend elections before his term is up. He might also extend term limits, and make it possible to serve more than two terms. Any elections after that will likely be just for show, like in Russia.

[–] Riversedgeknight1@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

But you realize that he can only do what people let him? Things like the second amendment exist so that if the people want to disband/replace the existing government they can. Everyone in the military is a person with free will too. And if he tries to run for a third term, I think that there will be more than just 2 or 3 attempts on his life. It's valid to believe he will try, but there is simply nothing meaningful or lasting he can do. He's just another millionaire after fame and fortune, I don't think he's willing to get shot for it.

I dunno, maybe democracy should have some limits like not allowing convicted Charleses Mansons with genocide in their agenda participate.
