From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Linux is a family of open source Unix-like operating systems based on the Linux kernel, an operating system kernel first released on September 17, 1991 by Linus Torvalds. Linux is typically packaged in a Linux distribution (or distro for short).

Distributions include the Linux kernel and supporting system software and libraries, many of which are provided by the GNU Project. Many Linux distributions use the word "Linux" in their name, but the Free Software Foundation uses the name GNU/Linux to emphasize the importance of GNU software, causing some controversy.

You might be waiting for a few decades. I don't think UI design is what foss is known for (outside of gnome)

What would be cool is of they could make Minetest support third party launchers.

Third party launchers are the LAST thing we need, and would provide no benefit that the game itself doesn't already provide.

Minecraft needs launchers because of the lack of built-in mod support and the fact that its closed source. Minetest is the opposite of these things.

I mean for the UI. I want to be able to make a libadwaita app that works like the current UI. It should create a space the engine can render in.

You can use command line arguments for minetest to bypass the built in menu. You could then re-implement all menu features yourself.

Oh. Im on KDE and it runs great there. I think you could probably port the game to use libadwaita as a fork if you wanted

Not really. A few of their developers have been redeveloping the menus. They redesigned the settings menu and it looks great. They're redesigning the content db pages and home pages. Some designs have been put out and I wouldn't be surprised if we saw something in the next few versions.

Edit: Changes are pretty close now:

outside of gnome

For being bad I hope, lol.

If there is one think gnome has going for it is careful UI design. They spend years perfecting something.

[–] lud@lemm.ee 1 points 3 months ago (1 children)

But have they made it any better?

[–] TheGrandNagus@lemmy.world 1 points 3 months ago

Gets better with every release, just like basically any DE.

It looks alright but the UX is IMO bad.

The UX is probably the best thing about it. Better than anything else by a long shot. I really wish others would catch up and abandon the Windows 95 UX. They're just so clunky and stuck in the past.

Yeah, gnome seems to be something you either hate or love.

Admittedly I haven't used Gnome that much (because I don't like it) but I'm in the former group, I can't stand the UI and the UX sucks for me. Gnome really feels clunky and like change for the sake of change.

I really like KDE though. I'm also not a fan of MacOS and especially not the way they take out the menus in programs and force it to be OS integrated. I really really hate that. The program should stay inside the program and not invade my OS.
