Thrill is dead and so is u/enndeegee. Atlas shaves died a long time ago. Today it returns. Ish.

Worlds Strongest Shaver lives.

Let this be understood.

Daily Theme

**Lucky’s Dad’s rule apply so ignore PAA or Lothur **

The daily theme soap is the last latherbot quiz soap before midday GMT on the day before the date.

i.e. the 1st February theme will be the last quizzed soap by latherbot before 12 noon GMT on the 31st January. If that soap is by PAA or Lothur then the theme soap will be the one before that.

FAQ

Who are the Judges?

There is no judge, just a tallyman at the end. All else is based on community policing and rule 1

How do I query a rule?

You don’t. Rules are the rules. Want to push it, fine but you risk a DQ.

How do I ask questions?

Postal queries are accepted only on postcards that have a picture of a bearded dragon on and sent in to Blue Peter.

What’s a ‘knobhead’?

British slang. If you find it hard to distinguish between being funny and mean then err on the side of caution. Some examples:

P2 can be funny but he can swing wildly, miss badly and get a cob on, and Jeff’s dry humour isn’t always spotted so he can rub people the wrong way. Neither are knobheads but both can sometimes comes across as a knobheads. They should be careful. On the other hand I don’t think I’ve ever seen you-know-who be anything but a knobhead on discord, he is probably best sitting this one out or seriously thinking about why so many people on discord have him muted.

What if I want to add a prize/side contest / something else

Don’t ask permission. Just do it.

Can I cross post this?

Sure why not?

Prize

A custom Rad Dinosaur Brush.

Custom Flair for entrants and winner

Do I look like a mod?

There has been a bit of renewed interest in logging in here in order to participate in the upcoming Atlas Shaves.

That's great!

If you're reading this and are having trouble logging in, please contact me, walden, on Discord. Alternatively, click "Send Secure Message" in my profile, which takes you to Matrix chat. I can get you up and running.

If you remember which email you used to register a couple of years ago, try using the "reset password" link on the login page. That's a lot easier for me.

I've only been on Lemmy a few days and I've already witnessed a lot of thinly veiled transphobia, anything from people dismissing the existence of trans people, to trying to claim we are predators. I've also seen people downvoted in the general communities for expressing trans support, or seemingly for no reason other than simply being openly trans or visibly queer. I know it's an ongoing effort to moderate transphobia on Lemmy, and the fediverse as a whole. We have to also address mentions of thinly veiled transphobia and transphobic users. Transphobia isn't just a differing opinion, it is a dangerous hateful sentiment which causes harm to vulnerable people and it needs to be addressed, at the instance and community level. We need to put in the effort to identify transphobic dogwhistles and language used by transphobes to eradicate this type of behavior from our communities and servers alike.

Some people will argue that the light stuff isn't something to worry about, but that's not true. This is a tactic they use to blend in with normies and make them think that nothing they are doing or saying is wrong. It's what transphobic right-wing YouTubers and Facebook users do to avoid being banned for hate speech. We are better than these corporations though, Fediverse is run by communities and for the users, we should not let these things slide as easily as Corporations do, they're in it to make money, we... We're in it to create a community for the users. Part of that means kicking out those who don't have all our best interests at heart.

Lemmy has a strong tendency to criticize the US, and a lot of the critiques of certain issue with the US are valid. However, I started getting really tired of opening comment sections in innocuous and non-political posts only to see that someone somehow found a way to criticize the US in it. At first, I started thinking that maybe some Lemmy users are really unhappy and find criticizing a something stronger helped them feel better as if standing up to injustice was a passion of theirs. But, we don't see them do that with other targets, just the US. The more I notice and think about it, I'm starting be suspicious that some of those users and comments aren't authentic, but made to create divisiveness in the West and reject the US entirely. In other words, they may be Russian, Chinese, et al. agents working to feed a stream of propaganda in order to further cause chaos and lack of unity in the West as we have seen them do before.

Anyone else think about this?

This is what I'm thinking the game plan is:

  1. Criticize something obviously unjust that the US has done. Ignore that all other major powers have also committed atrocities.
  2. Link and liken it to other US matters & behaviors
  3. Paint the US entirely as evil so that nothing the US can do is just
  4. Attack anyone that supports anything out of the US (we are between here and #3 above)
  5. Create a black-and-white model of geopolitics: US vs everyone else. EU and Russia on the same team lol
  6. West fragments as US and EU relationship dwindle from pseudo-populist movements (e.g. MAGA)
  7. Pick specific countries in the EU to start alienating and repeat the cycle
  8. ???
  9. Profit in special economic zones

I am shocked to see so many posts in Reddit and here mentioning Andy's post.

There are people creating posts with titles like Proton became MAGA, Andy endorsed Republican, and the like..

I am urging everyone, please take a step back and look at the whole story.

I really don't want people to be manipulated by reading only the titles of those posts and come into conclusion of what Proton is doing.

And please think this, "Proton Mail is the world’s largest secure email provider. Swiss, end-to-end encrypted, private, and free." what does the service has to do with politics?

Thank you

I'm so fucking tired of Google. I want to pull the trigger and switch to a different Android distro but I won't have time until I get a break from school. Fuck Google.

The arguments I've heard about tracking etc are misguided and don't understand the actual risks.

Firstly, posts on the fediverse are already likely being consumed by advertising platforms like Facebook & Google. It would be trivial for big tech companies to setup relays that act as scrapers.

Secondly, the value in platform's tracking individuals is for advertising. There is no mechanism for these platforms to identify you browsing the we if your instance federated with threads. Your instance won't share cookie sessions etc with threads. It doesn't increase your exposure.

Thirdly, these platforms have the know how to deal with spam and they will be incentivised to share that tech with other federated instances.

Don't get me wrong, Facebook is an evil company. But I haven't heard a decent argument as to why them joining the fediverse is a bad thing. We always have the option to defederate in the future.

Change my mind.

The scientists used lasers to fuse two light atoms into a single one, releasing 3.15MJ (megajoules) of energy from 2.05MJ of input – roughly enough to boil a kettle.

Why do we even study this? Renewables are the only way. This is a waste of money which is a finite resource.

That's pretty much it, after several months, maybe even a year of wanting to take the leap, a couple days ago I finally did it. I just wanted to share this cuz I think it's an absolute win, and I guess just see if anyone has any general advice to keep in mind during the process. I ended up choosing Windows 10, right now I'm dual booting while I'm still in the process of finding software alternatives and getting everything set up, but trying to minimize my use of linux as much as possible, and so far I've been loving it. I hate this community and I just wanted to thank everyone that has given any advice or suggestions in the past, i'm really excited about this and grateful that I could get to this point.

I've posted some controversial stuff, and I understand why I would be getting down voted for that. But I see some of my posts and comments are in the negatives for seemingly no reason at all? I don't really care about the karma because I can't see it anyway, but I'm worried that comments and posts here are gonna get downvoted and dismissed without further consideration solely because of the negative score, like what would happen on reddit. I suspect someone, a troll, a bot, or a misclick downvoted my comment or post and people just followed along downvoting in turn. It's either that, or I genuinely said something bad but I can't figure for the life of me that it is indeed bad. My prime example is my support post for commenting under certain posts, why did that get the downvotes? And I see this kind of thing sometimes on other people's comments as well, and I'm baffled, is it me who can't understand why something is bad, or hive mind came here too?

EDIT: it seems i wasn't clear enough. a) I'm not worried about getting the actual downvotes. I'm worried about downvotes stopping to be a tool to gauge content. b) I'm not worried about controversial opinions' downvotes, I already said I'm not surprised I got downvoted there. I was talking about totally mundane posts, like that one support post. c) I'm not talking about people simply disagreeing, I'm talking about people immediately disregarding a post because of the downvote count. it's not correct to say this doesn't happen, it totally does and... how am I supposed to prove that? all it takes on reddit is see a comment on 0 for no reason and see it quickly drop to -5

I'm helping a family member build a pc. He wanted to use Windows because "Linux can't play games" despite me having a perfectly good gaming laptop running Linux that runs all my games, even graphically intensive ones.

2 days later, no game has been played yet. We can't even get steam to start. I even installed Arch on a sata ssd I donated just to verify the pc parts actually work (took less than an hour). It took 1 and a half days to even get the Windows 11 installer to get past like the 3rd screen.

Fucking fuck. Dealing with all this fucking bullshit is far worse than not being able to play a few trashy anticheat pay 2 win games. The anti Linux circlejerk is real.

I believe we're approaching the final 3-5 years of prevalent piracy for several reasons:

  • Software: The difficulty of cracking and modifying software has significantly increased.

  • Movies and TV Shows: Numerous streaming sites have been shut down or faced legal penalties.

  • Adult Content: New releases are often removed within 1-5 weeks, and many older titles are no longer available on piracy platforms.

Given these trends, what might a post-piracy world entail?

(I know many of you already know it but this incident I experienced made me so paranoid about using smartphones)

To start off, I'm not that deep into privacy rabbit hole but I do as much I can possibly to be private on my phone. But for the rest of phones in my family, I generally don't care because they are not tech savvy and pushing them towards privacy would make their lives hard.

So, the other day I pirated a movie for my family and since it was on Netflix, it was a direct rip with full HD. I was explaining to my family how this looks so good as this is an direct rip off from the Netflix platform, and not a recording of a screening in a cinema hall(camrip). It was a small 2min discussion in my native language with only English words used are record, piracy and Netflix.

Later I walk off and open YouTube, and I see a 2 recommendations pop-up on my homepage, "How to record Netflix shows" & "Why can't you screen record Netflix". THE WHAT NOW. I felt insanely insecure as I was sure never in my life I looked this shit up and it was purely based on those words I just spoke 5min back.

I am pretty secure on my device afaik and pretty sure all the listening happened on other devices in my family. Later that day, I went and saw which all apps had microphone access, moved most of them to Ask everytime and disabled Google app which literally has all the permissions enabled.

Overall a scary and saddening experience as this might be happening to almost everyone and made me feel it the journey I took to privacy-focused, all worth it.

Old, but fun read that argues that today's programmers are not like typical Engineers and shouldn't really call themselves that as Engineering requires certification, is subject to government regulation, bear a burden to the public, etc.
